A 1965 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R sold at auction for a record-breaking $3.85 million this past weekend by Mecum Auctions in Indianapolis, IN.

That sale price eclipses the $3.74 million paid for the 1968 Mustang featured in the film “Bullitt”, making it the highest price ever paid for a Mustang.

So what’s so special about this GT350R?

In addition to being the prototype for the famed GT350R line of cars, this particular Shelby, known as the “Flying Mustang,” was driven by Ken Miles, who was recently portrayed by Christian Bale in the film Ford v. Ferrari.

Miles and other development drivers reportedly put more than 50,000 miles on the car in testing. Other notable drivers, including Bob Bondurant, also spent time behind the wheel, and it was the first Shelby to win a race.

The Shelby had previously been restored and won several “Best of Show” awards before being sold by Mecum.
