2020 Detroit Auto Show canceled

DETROIT — The 2020 Detroit Auto Show, scheduled for June, was canceled Saturday, and its venue will be converted into a field hospital as the coronavirus pandemic increasingly devastates Michigan.

The Detroit show, officially known as the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), is one of the oldest and most prestigious auto shows in the world. Traditionally held in January, this year was the first time the show was to have been held in June, as organizers shifted dates amid competition from other shows.

The coronavirus has already forced organizers to cancel the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year in Switzerland. The New York Auto Show, scheduled for April, was postponed. Its venue, the Javits Center, will be repurposed as a field hospital that’s expected to open Monday.

“Although we are disappointed, there is nothing more important to us than the health, safety and well-being of the citizens of Detroit and Michigan, and we will do what we can to support our community’s fight against the coronavirus outbreak,” NAIAS Executive Director Rod Alberts said in a statement.

2020 GMC Sierra gets pricing, packages, trims detailed

A couple of months ago we covered a brace of changes GMC made to the 2020 Sierra 1500. Those included availability of the 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque, the 5.3-liter V8 getting the 10-speed automatic transmission, the CarbonPro Editions debuting for AT4 and Denali trims, and a new bed view camera. But GMC has made a few more smaller changes throughout, as GM Authority found, part of a detailed overhaul among GM’s pickup lines that’s already changed trim names, trim volume, and prices on the Chevrolet Canyon and GMC Colorado. We’ll start with MSRP adjustments on the 2020 Sierra: 4WD drivetrains in SLT, and the AT4, and Denali trims that only come in 4WD, see a price increase of $200. There are also more MSRPs to consider this year, with a handful of new Elevation models filling price gaps.

The only changes inside are AT4-logoed all-weather floor liners that come standard for that trim, and adaptive cruise control joining the Driver Alert Package II available on the SLT, AT4, and Denali trims.

Speaking of packages, the Value Packages represent truth in advertising. The new base-model Sierra Sierra Value Package costs

GM and Ford take immediate austerity measures in coronavirus crisis

DETROIT — The two largest U.S. automakers on Thursday announced measures to shore up their finances as the coronavirus pandemic takes a deep economic bite, with Ford aiming to resume production next month of its most profitable vehicles while cutting costs further.

General Motors, the No. 1 U.S. automaker, said it planned to keep its plants closed indefinitely and was reducing the pay of salaried employees and executives and suspending some future product programs to conserve cash.

GM’s chief executive and chief financial officer issued a stark warning to company employees in an internal video, saying that “significant austerity measures” were needed to preserve the company’s long-term viability.

To generate cash, Ford said it was poised to restart production at some plants in North America as early as April 6, bringing back such profitable vehicles as its top-selling F-150 full-sized pickup, the Transit commercial van and SUVs. The plants that produce those vehicles are located in the U.S. states of Michigan and Kentucky and in Mexico.

To save cash, Ford said it was temporarily cutting hundreds of executives’ salaries, among other actions. This came a day after Standard & Poor’s downgraded the Dearborn, Michigan-based company’s debt to “junk” status
